What we do

Cardiac Services BC (CSBC) facilitates the delivery of specialized cardiac services throughout British Columbia.

We oversee provincial contracts for essential supplies, fund key cardiac procedures and services, maintain the provincial cardiac data registry, and play a central role in system planning and quality improvement.

Provincial system planning and access

Cardiac Services BC supports data-informed provincial strategic planning for cardiac services. We work collaboratively with regional health authorities to strengthen the health system’s ability to deliver quality, accessible cardiac care while supporting effective responses to emerging challenges.

We work closely with regional health authorities to:

  • Support data-informed provincial system planning based on current patterns of use and projected future needs
  • Facilitate timely, equitable access to sustainable care within B.C.’s cardiac care system
  • Develop service delivery standards and benchmarks

Provincial cardiac registry

CSBC maintains the provincial cardiac registry, CVI.Source - a comprehensive source of data on cardiac procedures and specialized services. CVI.Source data is used to manage waitlists, report on wait time targets, support outcome evaluation, drive quality improvement initiatives, and inform provincial planning.

Key measures tracked include:

  • Number of patients waiting for a procedure
  • Number of patients receiving a procedure within recommended wait times
  • Hospital readmissions and patient outcomes

Quality, research and integrated care

Cardiac Services BC (CSBC) contributes to continuous quality improvement across the cardiac care system. In coordination with regional health authorities, we identify opportunities for improvement, establish key performance indicators, and facilitate sharing of best practices.

Our team of strategic leads, data analysts and statisticians work to:

  • Facilitate population-level health services research that informs provincial policy, practice, and care
  • Identify opportunities for BC cardiac care system improvements to enhance the quality of patient care
  • Foster partnerships that drive innovation and growth
  • Drive implementation of evidence into practice (knowledge translation)

Finance and business operations

Our finance and operations team members manage CSBC’s annual operating budget to support the delivery of cardiac procedures across the province.

This team is responsible for:

  • Developing annual budgets and financial planning
  • Administering referred-out funding to regional health authorities
  • Overseeing provincial procurement processes
  • Measurement and improvement
